How much is car insurance in Australia? There is no single price. The amount you pay depends on the cover you choose, your car, its drivers, where it is kept, how it is used and the excess you agree to pay if you claim. Two people insuring the same model can receive different quotes. To find the cost for your situation, compare personalised quotes for the same level of cover and the same excess.

For South Australian drivers, it also helps to separate compulsory third party (CTP) insurance from optional cover for vehicle and property damage. They protect against different risks and are paid for differently.

First, which type of car insurance do you mean?

CTP insurance covers liability for injuries caused to other road users. In South Australia, you pay for CTP when you register or renew registration for a vehicle. It does not pay to repair your car or another person's car after a collision. The SA CTP Insurance Regulator explains how insurer choice works at renewal.

Third party property damage insurance generally covers damage your car causes to other people's vehicles or property, subject to the policy's terms. It usually does not cover repairs to your own car.

Third party, fire and theft insurance adds limited protection for your own car against the events named in the policy, alongside third party property cover.

Comprehensive insurance generally covers accidental damage to your car and damage you cause to other people's cars or property, as well as risks such as theft and some weather events. Cover, limits and exclusions still vary by policy. ASIC's Moneysmart guide to choosing car insurance explains these cover types in more detail.

What affects the premium?

Insurers assess more than the car's purchase price. Common factors include:

  • The vehicle: its make, model, value, age and repair costs.
  • The drivers: who will drive it, their age and driving or claims history.
  • Where and how it is used: your location, kilometres driven, private or business use, and where it is parked.
  • The cover chosen: comprehensive or third party cover, optional benefits, limits and the insured value.
  • The excess: the amount you may have to contribute to a claim. A higher excess can reduce the premium, but it increases what you must be ready to pay after an insured event.
  • Payment arrangements and discounts: monthly instalments can cost more overall than an annual payment, and discounts may come with conditions.

These factors do not produce a standard Adelaide price. Insurers weigh them differently, so an old quote or someone else's premium is a poor guide to what you will pay now.

How the scope of cover changes the total cost

The premium is only one part of the decision. A cheaper policy may have a higher excess, narrower cover, lower limits or fewer benefits. If your car is written off, the payout can also depend on whether the policy uses market value or an agreed value. Read the Product Disclosure Statement and check which drivers, uses and events the policy covers.

Car servicing belongs in a separate budget. Standard motor insurance generally excludes wear and tear and mechanical failure; check the policy wording for your cover. A service can identify maintenance or repair needs, but it does not guarantee a lower premium. If you are budgeting for both costs, our car service page explains the maintenance work our Flinders Park workshop provides.

Questions to ask when comparing quotes

Get quotes using the same vehicle, drivers and intended use, then compare like with like:

  1. Is the quote for CTP, third party property, third party fire and theft, or comprehensive cover?
  2. What is the annual total if I pay monthly, including any instalment charges?
  3. What is the standard excess, and could extra excesses apply to a younger or unlisted driver?
  4. Is the car insured for market value or an agreed value, and what are the payout limits?
  5. Are hire car, towing, windscreen, storm damage and other benefits included or optional?
  6. What uses, drivers, modifications or accessories must I declare?
  7. What exclusions, waiting periods or conditions could affect a claim?

Do not choose on the headline premium alone. A policy is useful only if it covers the risks you need it to cover at a cost you can manage.

A practical next step

Decide what loss you could afford yourself, then obtain several current quotes for the same cover and excess. Compare the Product Disclosure Statements, not just the price. If a term is unclear, ask the insurer to explain it before you buy. For South Australian CTP, check the insurer options shown when you renew your registration.

Mobile Brakes is a mechanical workshop, not an insurer or insurance adviser. If your question is about a vehicle fault or routine maintenance rather than a policy, contact our Flinders Park workshop and we can discuss an inspection or service.

Common Questions

Frequently asked questions

Is CTP the same as comprehensive car insurance?

No. CTP concerns injuries to people. Comprehensive cover generally concerns damage to vehicles and property, subject to its terms. In South Australia, CTP is paid with registration; comprehensive insurance is a separate purchase.

Does servicing my car reduce my insurance premium?

Do not assume it will. Premiums depend on the insurer's assessment and policy details. Routine servicing is valuable for vehicle maintenance, but it should not be presented as an insurance discount.

Why did my renewal cost more than last year?

The insurer may have changed its assessment, pricing or policy terms, and your circumstances may also have changed. Ask for an explanation, check the renewal details and compare other current quotes with equivalent cover.
