What Gets Measured

What We Check and Measure

An inspection that is only a visual check is a guess. These are the six things measured on every brake job, and what we are looking for in each.

ComponentWhat We Measure and Why
Brake padsRemaining friction material measured on inner and outer pads, not judged through the wheel.
Discs and rotorsThickness measured against the minimum stamped on the disc, plus scoring, lipping and uneven wear.
Brake fluidTested for moisture content. Fluid absorbs water over time, which lowers its boiling point and softens the pedal.
Calipers and slidesChecked for seizing, which is the usual cause of one side wearing faster than the other.
Lines and hosesInspected for corrosion, chafing, perishing and weeping, particularly where they flex.
HandbrakeTravel and holding performance checked, and adjusted where needed.

Measuring against specification is what tells you whether a component has a service life left or needs replacing now. It is also what stops you paying for parts that did not need changing.

Common Warning Signs

Signs Your Brakes May Need Attention

Brake issues can start gradually, but even minor changes in braking feel should be taken seriously.

  • Squeaking or grinding noises

  • Soft or spongy brake pedal feel

  • Vehicle pulling while braking

  • Reduced stopping performance

  • Vibration through the pedal

  • Warning signs of worn components

If you are trying to work out how urgent a noise is, our guide on what causes squeaky brakes sets out which sounds mean book soon and which mean stop driving.

Repair Options

Repair, Machine or Replace

Not every brake job needs new discs. Which of these three applies is decided by measurement, and we will show you the reading rather than asking you to take our word for it.

OptionWhen It Applies
Pads onlyDiscs are within specification and wearing evenly. Pads replaced, hardware cleaned and the system checked.
Machine the discsDiscs are above minimum thickness but scored or uneven. Skimming restores a flat surface for the new pads.
Replace the discsDiscs are at or below minimum thickness, cracked, or too far gone to machine safely.

Machining is not always the cheaper answer. If a disc is close to minimum thickness, skimming it takes more material away and shortens what is left, so replacing is often the better value. We will tell you which way we would go and why.

Safety & Performance

A Healthy Brake System Supports More Than Just Stopping Power

Your brake system does more than slow the vehicle down. It plays an important role in control, stability and driver confidence in everyday traffic conditions.

When brake components wear out, you may notice reduced response, uneven braking and a less secure driving experience. Keeping up with regular vehicle servicing helps keep your braking system in good condition and supports overall safety and performance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Brake Repairs Adelaide FAQs

Squealing, grinding, a soft or spongy pedal, pulling to one side, vibration through the pedal or a longer stopping distance are the usual signs. A brake warning light or a dropping fluid level means book it in now rather than waiting.

No. If the discs are above minimum thickness and wearing evenly, pads alone are enough. If they are scored but still thick enough, machining can restore the surface. Discs are only replaced when the measurement says they need to be.

Brake fluid absorbs moisture over time, which lowers its boiling point and softens the pedal under heavy braking. Most manufacturers schedule a replacement interval, and we test the moisture content at every brake inspection.

Yes. We work on cars, utes and light commercial vehicles across most makes, including European vehicles. If you are unsure whether we cover yours, call the workshop and we will let you know.

A pad replacement is usually one to two hours and a brake fluid flush around an hour. If discs need machining or replacing, allow longer. We will give you a realistic time when you book.

Yes. You get the measurements, the recommendation and a price before any work is carried out. Nothing beyond what you approved gets done.
