Plug a scanner into any car built after about 1996 and it will return a fault code. The code names a circuit or a reading that is outside its expected range. It does not name the broken part.

The classic example is P0171, system too lean. It means the engine is receiving more air than the fuel trim can compensate for. That can be a split intake hose, a leaking inlet manifold gasket, a failing mass airflow sensor, a weak fuel pump, a blocked filter or a faulty oxygen sensor.

Replacing the oxygen sensor because the code mentions the mixture is guessing. Sometimes guessing works, which is exactly why the practice survives.

• Red. Stop when it is safe to do so. Oil pressure, charging and temperature warnings are in this group, and continuing to drive causes damage measured in engines.
• Amber or orange. Investigate soon. The car is usable but something is outside its normal range.
• Flashing check engine. Different from a steady one. A flashing engine light means an active misfire dumping unburnt fuel into the catalytic converter. Keep driving and you convert a spark plug bill into a converter bill.
• Green or blue. Information only, not a fault.

Oil pressure. Not the oil level light. The pressure warning means the pump is not maintaining pressure, and an engine run without oil pressure fails in minutes.

Charging. The battery light means the alternator is not charging. The car is running on stored energy and will stop, usually a long way from where you wanted.

Temperature. Overheating warps heads and blows gaskets, and the damage is done well before the engine actually stops.
